This edible mushroom with a dark brown cap comes from East Asia, however, it is nowadays grown on other places in the world as well. It is a traditional part of Chinese cuisine and its name comes from Japanese. Shiitake means a ''mushroom growing on a shii'', which is a beech tree. The mushroom is also widely used in the Asian folk medicine.
