Chlorella is a freshwater single-celled algae that has been known since 1890. Chlorella is used for the production of foods, nutritional supplements and cosmetics. Chlorella is also often used in alternative medicine as a means to detoxify the body. In the early 1950s, chlorella was considered as a new and promising primary source of food and a possible solution to the food crisis of that time. Regarding the fact that the growing world food problem was solved by improved crop efficiency and another progress in agriculture, people´s interest in this algae has declined.
